My thoughts on Newtown, Connecticut

If you haven't been able to guess from my posts over the last few days, I'm not one of these touchy-feely liberals who feels the need to pass a new law every time something bad happens.

I'm a Conservative. And Conservatives understand that there is only so much you can control in life. And the misbehavior of others is not one of them.

Sure, the elementary school shooting at Newtown was a tragedy, but our lives are filled with tragedies.

Planes crash, ships sink, tornados and hurricanes kill hundreds...sometimes thousands. And there is not a damn thing we can do about it.

Sadly, the loony liberals are all apoplectic and righteously indignant all over the airwaves right now. Nutty CNN host Piers Morgan is demanding we ban all firearms with automatic capacity.

Well...he's a nut who hasn't done his homework. Australia tried banning firearms a few years back... and crime rates skyrocketed!! Why? Because the people who weren't going to follow the ban suddenly knew that most people in their society had been disarmed.

It doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure out their reaction to that fact.

Also, another reason you don't ban firearms is because they are our last resort against tyranny.

We already have a President who decided that you don't have freedom of choice as to whether or not you buy health insurance. He has also been busy seizing car companies and banks.

Do I foresee a time when we Americans will have to take up arms against our leaders? For the time being, I would say no. But world history has shown us that situations can devolve very quickly.

Five years ago, the citizens in Libya and Syria certainly didn't think that their government would be gunning them down in the streets in 2012, but it happened. You always have to beware of the possibility of a total lunatic taking control of the government. History teaches us that it happens often...and in every possible corner of the globe.

I think the better reaction to a situation like Newtown, Connecticut would be to allow massive amounts of concealed-carry permits. Many of these school-shooting situations like Columbine and Virginia Tech could have been stopped quickly by the presence of just one more person with a gun.

Even a loony who is suicidal and intent on killing others sees his options drop dramatically when confronted by another armed individual. And that is the way I would prefer it.

Because when seconds counted, the Newtown Police were only 20 minutes away.
